Our Story

Leading the development of animal breeding and cheese-making in the region since the early years of the Republic, Boğatepe took its share of the political and economic transformations that occurred from the late 19th century onwards. The dissolution of dairy and livestock cooperatives in the 1970s, political instability in the 1980s, and border security policies implemented in the 1990s negatively impacted animal husbandry, which formed the basis of the village economy. With the dissolution of the traditional production structure, agricultural activities declined, product diversity was lost, and economic vitality largely faded. During this process, the young population began to migrate to cities in search of education and employment opportunities, and the village population has been steadily declining since 1965. The economic decline weakened not only livelihoods but also social bonds and community solidarity. Boğatepe's production culture, along with the tradition of cheese-making that was once a symbol of the region, began to fade into oblivion.

A traffic accident in the fall of 1999, which claimed the lives of 23 people from the village, became a turning point that paved the way for the establishment of the association. One of those who lost their lives in the accident was the brother of İlhan Koçulu, who lived in Istanbul. Returning to his village for the funeral, Koçulu observed the changes Boğatepe had undergone and took action with the villagers to restore the liveliness of his childhood memories to the village.

Fieldwork and interviews with villagers revealed that the root causes of migration and economic collapse lay in the shift away from production, the weakening of solidarity, and the erosion of local values. In response, villagers sought solutions within their own means, turning to heirloom seeds and reviving traditional farming methods. This process saw the resurgence of a production philosophy in harmony with nature. The work, led by women, increased solidarity between the villages of Küçük and Büyük Boğatepe, and production once again became a shared value. In order to give these efforts a permanent and organized structure, the Boğatepe Environment and Life Association (Boğatepe ÇEVDER) was founded in May 2007 with the support of village mayors and pioneering women farmers.

Today, Boğatepe ÇEVDER has established an increasingly strong solidarity network through its projects and volunteer contributions, as well as national and international collaborations. Led by women, it continues its work with a sustainable development approach that respects nature and focuses on the well-being of the local community. The continuity of this work is made possible by grants from institutions and organizations, the support of donors, and volunteer labor.

Our Areas of Work and Activities

Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Production

To protect our region's gastronomic identity and the cheese-making tradition that is the cornerstone of our village, we have obtained Geographical Indication status for Kars Kaşar cheese and Slow Food Presidium status for Boğatepe Gravyeri cheese. To share this heritage with a wider audience, we published the book “150 Years of Cheese-Making in Kars,” organized national and international cheese festivals, and spearheaded the establishment of Ekomüze Zavot, Turkey's first cheese museum. Our work is not limited to cheese making; it also includes workshops where we produce natural care products from endemic plants unique to our region and related Publications. Furthermore, sustainable production goals, such as the preservation of local seeds and the promotion of organic farming, form the basis of all our activities.

Solidarity-Based Ecotourism

We offer a solidarity-based tourism model that provides direct income to the local community without damaging the natural and cultural fabric of our village. In this model, our guests stay in the homes of villagers, participate in daily life such as milking cows, making cheese and bread, and enjoy an authentic experience. The most delicious example of our hospitality is the famous Boğatepe village breakfast served by our women in their own homes. Thanks to this unique approach, we have succeeded in becoming an important stop on the Kars Cheese Route.

Social Development and Capacity Building

Supporting the development of the entire village community, especially women, forms the basis of our work. In addition to vocational training aimed at improving the quality of tourism services, we organize seminars on women's health and animal health. To strengthen communication with international visitors, we organize French language courses for women with the support of volunteer trainers. We support all these activities with cultural tours and events that strengthen social bonds among our people. In addition, our association runs various programs to encourage women's economic empowerment, provide additional income for the village community, and raise awareness about the relationship between nature and humans.
