As Boğatepe Environment and Life Association, we have been developing projects that combine nature, culture, and community-driven development since the beginning. By blending local wisdom with scientific methods, we work in areas ranging from biodiversity and solidarity tourism to women's empowerment and climate-friendly production. Through national and international partnerships, these projects aim to provide sustainable solutions for rural areas, inspired by the Boğatepe model.

Proje Tarihi: 2010 - 2011

Project Date: 2010 - 2011

Funder/Supporter: United Nations Joint Programme (within the "Alliances for Culture Tourism in Eastern Anatolia" initiative)

Project Partners: Implemented through communal work (imece) with villagers and experts

Sector: Museology, Cultural Tourism, Rural Development, Architectural Restoration

One of the most important milestones of Boğatepe, the Ecomuseum Zavot project was implemented by ÇEVDER with the grant support of the United Nations Joint Program “Alliances for Cultural Tourism in Eastern Anatolia”. The main objective of the project was to preserve the vanishing traditional cheese production heritage of Kars and transform it into a sustainable cultural tourism model that provides economic benefits to the local community.

As part of the project, the old cheese dairy (zavot) was saved from ruin and restored with the help of villagers and experts. The lower floor of the building was organized as Turkey's first thematic cheese museum, while the upper floor was functionalized as an area open to the common use of the village.

The Ecomuseum Zavot has not only showcased the multicultural history and cheesemaking heritage of Boğatepe, but has also become the social and touristic center of the village. This project, which enables women's economic empowerment, increases the number of visitors to the village every year and offers an integrated model for rural development, is one of ÇEVDER's proudest initiatives with the highest multiplier effect.
